＜p＞In the year 2042, young cognitive scientist and armchair philosopher Philip Russell is terminated along with his entire academic department and dumped by his girlfriend. He joins The Pystead Group, a high-tech company in the Caribbean planning to live on the oceans in huge ships, seasteading. Philip’s journey to employment becomes a life-changing descent into the gothic hostility of his era, yet he continues to pursue the challenge of living in the ‘real-world.’＜br /＞ On the island of Nevis, Philip becomes engaged to an artist calling herself Ice, who is artistic curator for The Pystead Group. Weeks later the ex-professor finds himself in harm’s way while helping an acquaintance, and learns that he is at an epicenter of the world’s disruptive politics and technologies. He soon accepts that Pystead’s business and technical secrets are necessary to evade a dystopian era, and becomes part of their illegal, brain-scanning security program. Then he discovers that his fianc?e has secret duties and develops reservations about marrying her as fears arise from his past. Then times change: The United Nations does not grant Pystead a seasteading license and is forcing the company to leave Nevis -- apparently with no place to go.＜br /＞ But Pystead has not spent ninety billion kicu (dollars in 2042) without having a Plan B. Pystead’s huge platform pontoons at sea have been built as spaceships using their own secret propulsion technology. Now Philip must choose Ice and Mars, or living professionally blacklisted in the USA. He wants to accept Ice and her secret duties, and with nudges from his clever mentor he begins adapting to his real-world situation. Aboard ship, for the second time, Philip asks Ice to marry him, and again she accepts, this time with Philip committed to her secret duties, children, and colony building on Mars.
